About Robert McPartland

Robert McPartland works in the still life tradition; his motifs are everyday, insignificant objects, often precariously balanced between clarity, calm and tension, which he then interprets as space, light, process and phenomena.Through the level of attention he brings to his work,he creates visual meditations on the everyday that are layered and poetic. His work makes reference to the Italian tradition, particularly Piero Della Francesca, Caravaggio, Giorgio Morandi and Domenico Gnoli.

Inspiration

I paint in the still life tradition and play with everyday, insignificant objects, often precariously balanced between clarity, calm and tension; I’m more interested in the ‘how’ than the ‘what’ and see objects as events or conditions and their identities as indeterminate until they react with other events or conditions, i.e. other objects, ‘space’ and light.
My relationship with my subject matter is intuitive and rarely programmatic or conceptualised; every element is a variable and fields of possibilities change in many ways, depending on my interaction with them. The process is deeply relational and it is through this organic engagement and the passing of time that any poetry, meaning or significance may become embodied and revealed.

It follows that I see the painting not as merely a material object or an illusionistic window, but in a sense as a living thing that metaphorises meaning and conveys human qualities directly through our right hemisphere. My wish is for the work to act and be responded to as in a human encounter.
(paraphrase of Ian McGilchrist, Master and his Emissary pg. 96)

I look to the work of the past, not nostalgically, but because in some of it I see startling confirmations of our new understanding of matter and the universe without and within. In my small way, I try to fold this into the humanity of painting.
