Do You Remember The Last Time?

September 27, 2019 · 2 min read

Do you remember the last time you watched something by chance? And became so captivated by it you watched it over and over? That happened to me recently on a chance suggestion on YouTube.

Time Spent Discovering Music Is Never Wasted

When I have time to myself I often turn to YouTube for some musical inspiration. I have quite eclectic tastes and I am happy to try out new artists and their music. I have discovered I like Mongolian rock music, the Nordic music of Skáld, the incredible vocals of Asif Avidan and much more besides. Avi Kaplan, Jack Savoretti and Haevn are now on my regular music playlist as a result of my browsing habits.

But What Makes Me To Hit The Play Button?

Sometimes the name of an artist, or type of music, will encourage me to hit the play button and listen. If the music doesn’t grab me in the first 30 seconds I tend to move on. But sometimes I come across something that grabs my eye and I feel compelled to find out what it is all about. And that is how I have, rather belatedly, discovered Ane Brun.

Who Is Ane Brun?

Ane Brun is a Norwegian singer, songwriter. Much to my amazement, I find she has recorded eight albums since 2003. I am amazed that I have not come across her before.

It Was An Artistic Image That Caught My Eye

The only reason I clicked on the suggested video was because of the cover image. It reminded me of the paintings of Édouard Manet who was a 19th Century French modernist painter. I was intrigued to see what was behind that image. And what a revelation it was. Watch the video for ‘Do You Remember’ to see what I mean.

Stunning isn’t it? I spent several days after my first viewing humming ‘do you remember’ as I walked around the house. But it is not just the haunting vocals it is the cinematography and all the subtle elements within the video that deserve several viewings in order to appreciate.

This is actually the third in a series and it is worth watching them all from start to finish. The first one is called ‘Words’, then ‘One’, then this one ‘Do You Remember’ and the last one is ‘Worship’.

So now a whole new world of Ane Brun’s music has opened up for me. And hopefully you too!
